When I get a tattoo, it’s going to be a roadrunner 🙂

In October 2024, I traveled to Košice, Slovakia, to run the Košice Peace Half Marathon.  I booked a flight on American Airlines from Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport (AVP) to Zurich (ZRH) and spent my layover at the Capsule Hotel Zurich Airport.   Everything you need is in the airport, including a Migros grocery store.  The next morning, I walked the 5-minutes from the Capsule Hotel to the Swiss Airlines departures terminal for my flight to Košice.

I got a little bit turned around taking the 23 bus from Košice International Airport to the DoubleTree by Hilton, which was the race headquarters, mostly because I don’t speak Slovak.

I went to Saint Coffee multiple times a day for coffee and pastries, and to the Macak Studio to peruse pottery.

100th Anniversary Košice Peace Half Marathon 1924-2024

The Košice Peace Marathon is the oldest running race in Europe, taking place continuously from 1924 to 2024. It managed to preserve its continuity even during WWII and the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. The only race older than Košice is the Boston Marathon, founded on April 19, 1897.  It is a symbol of friendship, tolerance, and peace, as well as the universal brotherhood and sisterhood of running.

For those of you who are interested, the Association of International Marathons (AIMS) running website has published an article about the 100 years of the Košice Peace Marathon.

13.1 miles and going strong. 🇵🇸 🇱🇧 ☮️ 🕊️  Judging by the race results, about 98% of the runners were from Slovakia. Spectators on the sidelines were yelling at us “hup hup hup,” which we haven’t figured out the English translation for yet. © 2024 Susan M Hall
